IOPs can also be designed to help patients transition from more intensive levels of care, such as inpatient or residential treatment, to less intensive levels of care, such as standard outpatient treatment. An IOP can be a perfect form of treatment for someone who needs extra support to maintain their sobriety but does not need 24/7 care.

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a level of care that is one step down from inpatient treatment. It is designed for people who need more structure and support than what standard outpatient care can provide, but who don’t require the 24/7 supervision of inpatient treatment. For this reason, you’ll find that many of the same types of treatment and therapy are available as those that are at a residential facility.
What you or your loved one can expect during an IOP at Rebirth Recovery will vary from person to person. All of our programs are tailored to fit you and your loved ones needs.

How Does an IOP Compare to Other Types of Addiction Treatment?
How Long is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
Variations in your program will depend on several factors including the following:
- Type of substance addiction
- Length of addiction
- If you suffer from any co-occurring disorders
- If you’ve been to addiction treatment before
Who is the Ideal Candidate for an Intensive Outpatient Program?
There are many reasons why someone might choose to participate in an intensive outpatient program. Some of the most common reasons include:
- To avoid having to take time off from work
- Have completed a more intensive treatment program, such as inpatient rehab or a partial hospitalization program, and need additional support to maintain their sobriety
- Are not ready or able to commit to a residential treatment program
- Have milder addictions
IOPs provide a high level of care and support for patients with addiction, while also allowing them to maintain some level of independence. Because IOPs require patients to only attend treatment a few times per week for a few hours at a time, they can still work or go to school while in treatment.
IOPs are also typically more affordable than other forms of treatment, such as inpatient or residential treatment. They also provide most of the same forms of therapy and treatment options as inpatient care, so as long as someone is disciplined enough outside of therapy an IOP can be an excellent treatment option.
Who Should Not Attend an IOP?
It’s also important that patients in IOPs be willing and able to commit to attending all scheduled sessions. Because IOPs typically meet less often than other forms of treatment, each session carries more weight. Missing even one group therapy session can mean falling behind the rest of the group, which can make it difficult to stay engaged in treatment.
Patients who are struggling with severe addiction or mental illness may not be best suited for an IOP. These patients may benefit more from 24/7 care that is associated with a residential treatment program.
